Charities support local rugby

Berkswell and Balsall Rugby Club is a well supported local rugby club, with mini and junior teams through the age groups, a girls tag rugby team and two senior men's teams.

There are training sessions or matches going on most days of the week, giving people the opportunity to physically exercise and develop teamwork, respect, discipline and sportsmanship whilst enjoying themselves at the club.

There are regular social activities for club members, or for other parties who use the facilities of grounds and clubhouse as well.

Recently, the club had an opportunity to purchase and secure some land it had been renting for many years for some of its pitches. This was a substantial investment and required the club to take out a loan. As well as collecting monies from club members and sponsors, the club also approached local bodies who may be able to help provide some funds for the loan.

One of the bodies who agreed to provide a donation towards the cost of the land was Berkswell Charities, who wanted to ensure that opportunities for local children to engage and participate in sport were available in the Berkswell, Balsall and surrounding areas.

Two Berkswell Charities Trustees, Sue Walton and Norman Childs, came to visit the club one busy Sunday lunch time to see the facilities for themselves, and most importantly the children playing rugby and then meeting in the clubhouse afterwards to socialise with their friends and family.

Sue and Norman are in the centre of the photograph, holding a (very muddy) rugby ball that had just been used for an Under 13's age group match, helping celebrate Berkswell & Balsall winning a tight, hard contested match.

Sue said "It is helpful for us to visit and see the projects we are asked to support. Trustees are always willing to receive and consider requests for assistance, and it is a pleasure to see how we have been able to help Berkswell & Balsall Rugby Club with their project to secure the facilities for so many children and families to engage actively in sport".
