In the UK we tend to be reserved when it comes to talking about our charitable giving. The phrase charitable benefactor often is associated with a wealthy individual, a philanthropist offering a charity a significant financial gift. It’s unlikely that any charity would turn down such generous funding, but most charities are reliant on smaller more modest bequests, of £5,000 to £20,000, made by a number of individuals. These smaller donations can however make a real impact and offer lasting support to the local community.
In 1997, resulting from long established links and personal service to the Parish, a generous legacy was made to Berkswell Charities for the benefit of Berkswell Church of England Primary School. This legacy was to be invested and the resulting interest to be paid annually to the Governors of the school, to be used at the discretion of the Head Teacher, for the benefit and enjoyment of the pupils of the school, particularly those, where monetary considerations inhibit full participation in out-of-school activities.
The legacy has had a hugely positive impact on so many pupils at Berkswell School. A small part of the legacy subsidises the cost of outings to concerts and the theatre for those pupils where the cost would prevent their attendance.
By far the largest sums paid from the legacy, relate to fees for pupils attending residential visits. During the summer term in year 6, there is a week-long trip to Devon, and there is also the year 5 'Rock' outing, lasting 3 days. Both outings involve pupils facing many physical activities, often well outside their comfort zone i.e.. kayaking, paddle boarding, assault courses, climbing, abseiling etc. and of course, having the experience of being away from home for periods of time, with all that entails. For many children, these visits are the first occasion they will have been away from home.
Donations such as this, are often from individuals where a charity in their Parish hold a personal significance. Such donations can make a tangible difference within the local community. Maybe you attended Berkswell Primary School, or your children or grandchildren did? Or were you married at St John Baptist Church in the heart of the village? Have you ever thought of creating a legacy or why not make a one-off donation and see how it is of benefit whilst you are still alive. Berkswell Charities invests its endowment funds plus other small funds in the CCLA Ethical Fund, income from this investment is used to fund both day-to-day expenditure and donations to beneficiaries. If you are interested in making a donation or leaving a bequest then Berkswell Charities would love to hear from you.
