On 15th July 2023, three Trustees and the Clerk attended the Almshouse Association Members Day 2023 at the prestigious One Great George Street in Westminster, London. The day was dedicated to embracing the values of Compassion, Community, and Companionship, which lie at the heart of the Almshouse Movement, A fourth ‘C’ was added to the theme by the special guest speak speakers – Care.
The keynote speaker was Sir Terry Waite who was kidnapped and held captive from 1987 to 1991 when he was in Lebanon to try and secure the release of four hostages, including journalist John McCarthy. Sir Terry Waite spoke about loneliness and how the model of Almshouses can alleviate it as they provide community and promote independence.

Paul Langham from the Charity Commission about their role in supporting Charities to thrive and strengthen society.
Sir Stephen Bubb is the executive director of the Gradel Institute of Charity at New College, Oxford, a new institute dedicated to research into charities which is the first research centre for charities in the world. They hope to eventually develop teaching at postgraduate and graduate levels in charity.
Dr Alison Pooley spoke about the architecture of the almshouse community which is very diverse but is at the heart of promoting independence and community.
Together, these esteemed individuals shed light on the caring nature of almshouses and emphasised the significance of human interaction. The day was filled with inspiring speeches, informative sessions, and networking opportunities, making it an extraordinary experience for all those attending.
